Fruits and vegetables during the year

Consuming them is a “must,” but admittedly, fruits and vegetables almost never make it into a person’s “Top 3 Favorite Foods” list. Yet, they are invaluable to our health, especially when the fruits and vegetables are consumed during their season. So, how do we know which season is the right one to eat which fruits and vegetables? At Horio, we decided to share, each month, which fruits and vegetables are best to have in our pantry. First, let’s take a look at why it is important to choose produce while they are in season.

Why prefer seasonal fruits and vegetables?

Let’s start from the beginning: What differentiates seasonal fruits and vegetables from the rest, making them a much better choice? With good health as our main objective, consuming seasonal fruits and vegetables is better than eating out-of-season produce for the following reasons:
  • Simply put, they are fresh and taste better!
  • Seasonal produce is produced with fewer pesticides than out-of-season fruits and veggies
  • The vitamins and nutrients content of in-season produce is maximized
  • The ingredients with which they supply our body are appropriate to the season and cover our physical needs of the season. For instance, summer fruits are much more watery than winter fruits, thus addressing the body’s need for hydration during the high temperatures of the summer months. On the contrary, winter fruits are rich in vitamins such as Vitamin C, so as to better fortify our body against germs and viruses.

October’s harvest

Now that we know why we should opt for seasonal produce, let’s see which fruits and vegetables are “the fruits and vegetables of the month”- Fresh in October, those currently on super market shelves and the farmer’s markets’ stands, as well as, the last chance produce, which are at the end of their season and which we know that if we don’t take them home today, we’ll have to wait until our next meeting, months later:
